All About Dildos
Part 1
What is a dildo?
It is quite simple. It is any object that is purposely designed to
be inserted into the vagina or anus. Dildos do not vibrate. That’s
what vibrators do. Nowadays, dildos are made of glass, vinyl, silicone
or rubber. Some are called realistic and look like penises. They
are fleshed coloured with veins and little bumps. Some come with
an accompanying
set of balls. Some of these realistic dildos are made from casts
of popular porn stars. Other dildos come a variety of colours and
shapes.
Some look like creatures (dolphins, caterpillars). Some are double
ended. Some are fantastically large, others rather small and many
in between.
The word dildo is
derived from the Latin word dilatare and means to open wide (to dilate).
The word dildo is also related to the Italian word diletto, which means
delight. Merriam Webster traces the word back to the year 1598. However,
people have been using dildos for much longer than that.
We have found images
of dildos among most primitive cultures and according to The Prehistory
of Sex, dildos predate civilisation - including an Upper Palaeolithic
sculpture that is over thirty thousand years old! We have also found
them on ancient Greek pottery, on Egyptian wall paintings, among East
Indian stonewalls and in Chinese ivory carvings.
In the past dildos
were commonly made of wood or leather. During the Hellenistic Age the
coastal city of Miletus in Asia Minor was well known for its production
and exportation of such dildos. In the past dildos had a public place
in society. For example, they were featured in classic Greek comedy
plays as well as in dialogues. The status of the dildo has since changed.

Some people consider a dildo a second rate penis. It is what someone
uses
when no living,
breathing penis is available. However, intercourse is not what defines
a sexual experience. Pleasure is and we can all experience that in
a bunch of different ways.
“A dildo is
not a penis substitute anymore than riding a bike is a substitute for
taking a stroll. A dildo is an object that allows you to penetrate
yourself or a partner in a marvellous variety of ways. Dildos are logical,
dare we say, natural response to the fact that many of us enjoy having
our vaginas or anuses filled, no two of us have exactly the same preferences
in terms of length, width and shape of the object filling us. …dildos
offer novelty, spice up your routine and teach you about the range
of your appetites.” - The New Good Vibrations Guide to Sex (1997)
I enjoy bringing
out the toys when I want a long sex session. Dildos do not get sore
or need a break to catch their breath. I use dildos because I enjoy
varying the kinds of stimulation I receive. Two of my favourite things
to do with dildos are to have my partner watch me use a dildo on myself
and to have him or her use a dildo on me. With a dildo you can get
into positions that are just not possible with intercourse. I especially
like to twirl dildos around so that my outer lips are stimulated. It
is such a turn on!

If you are interested
in adding dildos to your sexual repertoire, there are a few things
to keep in mind.
1- No two vaginas
are alike and no one vagina is alike all the time. At different times
in a woman’s life, her menstrual cycle, and in different positions,
her vagina will be able to accommodate different sized and shaped objects.
You need to select a dildo accordingly.
2- You need to relax to use dildos – especially in your ass. Doing Kegel
exercises can help, as can breathing exercises. Take things slow and don’t
force anything in that you cannot comfortably accommodate.
3- Use lube. Choose an appropriate lube for the material of the dildo. Water
based lubes tend to be best since silicone lubes can be detrimental to the
integrity of silicone dildos.
4- Clean those dildos and/or use condoms on them to avoid bacterial or viral
infections. Wash them after each use with a mild soap and let them dry before
putting them away (I keep mine in a Tupperware container).
5- Do not share your dildo unless you have changed the condom. The same goes
for moving from your anus to your vagina. Personally, I just keep those dildos
separate. I have some dildos for my vagina and others for my ass.
6- Do not use a dildo in your ass unless it has a flared based.
7- Be reasonably with your sex play. Use dildos rather than household items.
Dildos are meant for sexual penetration. Other things can cause internal damage
or get lodged. I do not think most of us want to end up on one of those websites
that feature photos from freaky hospitable visits!
